In today’s alumni spotlight, we’re highlightin In today’s alumni spotlight, we’re highlighting Valerie! She was also part of Hunter’s business gala (see pic 2) which is a networking event in May organized across the business clubs at Hunter College (Association of Business Students, Investment & Trading Society, Forte, and the Cooperman Business Center) for the opportunity to mingle with like minded students as well as professionals.

“Hi! I'm Hunter class of Spring 2022, and I majored in Economics with a minor in Sociology. I knew I wanted to do something in marketing early on and felt that the mix of those two degrees would put me at the perfect intersection of understanding how people think and what greater market forces affect buying behavior. Today I work as an Analytics Services Associate at Veeva Systems, which is a fancy way of saying I do a mix of marketing analytics and client services at a software company, and I see how my degree shapes the way I think about economic forces and the analyses I do every day”.

Cord Barnes

“I am a second year HASPERE student and am writing to update you regarding some of my achievements thanks to and while in the program. I would also like to share what will be coming next for me.

I have spent the last year working between Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve and Federal Reserve Bank of New York. During Summer 2022, I interned in the Division of International Finance as a Graduate Economic Research Assistant at Board of Governors. In my role I supported work on a paper series that describes the steps Global Systemically Important Banks (GSIBs) are taking to green their operations, investments, and portfolios. I was one of a select number of interns offered to continue my work through the fall and my internship was extended through December 2022.

In Fall 2022, I began a concurrent position as a Research Analyst Intern (HASPERE Scholar) in the Division of Research and Statistics at Federal Reserve Bank of New York (FRBNY). At FRBNY, I support Housing and Public Policy within the Equitable Growth Studies Group where I have helped to start a project which seeks to understand heterogeneity in the effects monetary policy might have on wealth accumulation.

I will be completing my thesis on the effects of Covid-19 tenant protections on local rent prices over the upcoming summer and I have accepted a full-time offer as a Research Assistant at Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C. I will continue my work on the Equitable Growth Studies Project (FRBNY) as well, though I will be based at the Board in D.C. I intend to remain in my D.C. role for at least 2 years before pursuing doctoral studies.

I've learned so much from the program and gained such valuable knowledge and experience. Conducting research at the FRBNY and the Board were two hopes of mine and HASPERE has helped me to reach these goals. I feel much more knowledgeable about and prepared for the career path I am pursuing!”
Thinking about starting a business? Hunter economi Thinking about starting a business? Hunter economics alum, Angela Chi, started a Chinese food pop-up.

“I graduated from Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College spring of 2020 and doubled majored in Economics and Chinese. I currently work on my own Chinese food experience pop-up called Chi Fan Le based in Detroit. We highlight the process, ingredients, history and culture behind many of the dishes I grew up eating and loving. During my time at Hunter, I took classes like international trade, developmental economics, microeconomics, and environmental economics, and these courses (and many others) laid down the foundation for so much of how I weigh cost and think about impact on the community and environment as I build Chi Fan Le.”

Hi! I’m Mohamed Benyamine, currently wrapping up Hi! I’m Mohamed Benyamine, currently wrapping up my final semester as a BA/MA this spring. While majoring in Poli Sci, Econ, and Thomas Hunter, I came to appreciate the rich opportunities that Hunter has to offer, especially in the BA/MA program. As I wrap up my thesis on Medicaid policy, I have a Data Analyst role lined up at Mount Sinai’s Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. I’m excited to take what I’ve learned here and really apply myself in this profession! My takeaway was don’t overlook the chances that come your way, you might find something you end up liking!

Ever wonder what Hunter economics alumni are doing Ever wonder what Hunter economics alumni are doing now? Here’s another alumni spotlight

“I graduated from Hunter spring of 2014, double majoring in economics and environmental studies with the Macaulay Honors Program at Hunter College. I am currently a manager of a customer success team at Brandwatch with 7 direct reports. I didn't start out in tech though, when I first graduated I worked at a law firm, Cohen Hochman & Allen for almost 2 years. My day-to-day tasks involved a lot of direct client interaction and a very basic application of supply and demand for the City violations that we helped our clients navigate. I then moved on to Yelp doing ad sales for 2 years. My ability to convey market forces and pitch the intent behind Yelp users on the app really helped me succeed with the business owners that I was selling Yelp ads to. Consumer intent and psychology is huge in behavioral economics and breaking this down for business owners was a huge undertaking and a big factor in my success. Then in 2019 I switched over to customer success at Falcon.io, now Brandwatch. As a manager of a customer success team, my primary responsibility is to ensure my team hits our renewal and upsell targets. The formulation of these targets, and our ability to reach them uses econometrics trends, along with macroeconomic models, combined with basic microeconomic principles to reach our goals. I'm thankful for the business mindset and critical thinking skills that my major in Economics from Hunter allows me to leverage in achieving my company's goals and objectives in order to succeed in my role.”
