Meet Chi Yeon Kim, the first Hunter student to be employed as an XBRL Summer Intern for the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB).

Established in 1973, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) is the independent, private-sector, not-for-profit organization based in Norwalk, Connecticut, that establishes financial accounting and reporting standards for public and private companies and not-for-profit organizations that follow Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

The primary objective of the Taxonomy staff’s activities is to update the US GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy (Taxonomy) for changes in GAAP, identify common reporting practices in filer taxonomy extensions and other technical enhancements, and to address questions about application of the Taxonomy.

Before applying for the position, he conducted XBRL research projects under the guidance of faculty advisor Professor Christine Tan including:

– Analyzed SEC XBRL documents to identify anomalies, extensions, and inconsistent tagging behaviors of companies across filings

– Researched US GAAP Taxonomy, such as definitions, references, and details, to identify incorrect tagging of companies.

While at Hunter College, he participated in Gateway to Professional Accounting Success (GPAS) program; and, he passed all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination.
