M.S. in Accounting

The M.S. program in accounting at Hunter College is designed for students who have satisfied the academic requirements for an undergraduate degree in accounting.  It provides intensive training in accounting research, information systems, ethics, and advanced coverage of the core topics in accountancy.  Hunter’s M.S. in Accounting has been approved by the New York State Department of Education as a CPA licensure-qualifying program for students who have earned a B.S. in Accounting at Hunter College or an equivalent undergraduate program.

Since August 2009, New York State has required all CPA candidates to have completed 150-credit hours in order to sit for the Uniform CPA Examinations.  Graduates of the M.S. program satisfy this requirement.  (Without a master’s degree, a minimum of two years of work experience is required).

The M.S. program is a 30-credit program consisting of six required courses, two accounting electives, and two non-accounting electives.  It can be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis.  The accounting faculty within the Economics Department at Hunter College has established a record of teaching excellence, with combined teaching experience of over 60 years, and has produced accounting research of the highest quality.

Applicants must:

  1. have a B.S. degree in accounting, or equivalent, from Hunter College or from another regionally accredited college or university with an overall GPA of 2.75 and a 3.0 GPA in accounting courses.
  2. submit two letters of recommendation
  3. take the GMAT exam
  4. take the TOEFL exam (if an applicant has received all or part of the undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language)
