Professor Conning joined the economics department in the Fall of 2002. His research and teaching interests focus on Development Economics, microeconomics and the theory of financial contracting, as well as Trade and modern political economy. His research has explored the structure and operation of rural financial markets, microfinance and the development of financial intermediation services for the poor, the roles of philanthropic capital, as well as models of agrarian production organization, property rights, and impact evaluation of property rights reforms. He previously taught in the economics department and the Center for Development Economics at Williams College in Massachusetts. During his 2009-10 sabbatical leave he is working as a visiting scholar at NYU's Wagner School working on a project on Social Investment.
